Biography
Wei Shi, full professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, holds the Canada Research Chair in Silicon Photonics. His team has pioneered several groundbreaking advances in integrated photonics and high-capacity optical communication systems. Currently, his research focuses on large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and their integration with electronic integrated circuits, aimed at revolutionizing AI and next-generation quantum systems. Professor Shi has led several major projects, including the $8M HiLight project focused on the development of hybrid photonic integration. In 2019, he co-founded EHVA Photonics, specializing in providing complete solutions for photonic chip testing and data intelligence. EHVA was subsequently acquired by EXFO Inc, a world leader in photonic test equipment. As a member of the Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL), Professor Shi leads the Photonic Systems and Microsystems Research Axis. He is a senior member of the IEEE and Optica societies.
